Kitchen Safety Checklist

The kitchen is one of the most used rooms in the home. It is a place of gathering for the entire family and helps creates memories and bonds that span generations.

One evening you may be cooking an Italian dish for your spouse’s birthday. The next day the kitchen may be used for entertaining neighbors over cookies and coffee. And on the weekend, your granddaughter may come and visit, and you decide to cook her favorite meal of mac n’ cheese with a side of applesauce.

With so many different people of ages and ability, it is important to keep the kitchen safe and accessible for all. The IM Store team has developed a list below of recommendations on how to make the kitchen easy and safe for all.

  • To safely reach upper cabinets, use a step stool with a handrail so you can balance with one hand while reaching above your head.
  • Use an oven rack guard to prevent accidental burns.
  • Replace cabinet and drawer pulls with D-shaped handles.
  • Use utensils, mixing bowls, cookware and dinnerware that are ergonomically designed and easier to use.
  • Make sure lighting is sufficient in food preparation areas; if not, switch to brighter lights or install additional light fixtures.
  • Use rocking knives that are easier to grip and can safely be used with one hand.
  • Have an up-to-date fire extinguisher ready.
  • Use cutting boards designed not to slip or have spikes to ensure the food your cutting stays in place.
  • Use a timer for cooking.
  • If standing in one place for any length of time, consider a cushioned, anti-fatigue mat
  • Use silicon pot holders and trivets.
  • Make sure electrical/appliance cords are not dangling near water or stove areas.
  • Store sharp objects safely away.
  • Make sure kitchen ventilation systems or range exhausts are kept clean and function properly.
  • Clear away the clutter on floors, countertops, and tabletops.
